The trajectory of Anthony Braxton's Ghost Trance Music period extends from the mid-'90s until the year 2006, when he officially designated the end of that progression and the commencement or expansion of several others. The 2011 Leo Records release of GTM (Outpost) 2003 documents one small segment of that development during a period which is usually associated with GTM's accelerated intensification. The word "outpost" was most likely applied in response to the location dynamics of these recordings, which took place in Albuquerque, New Mexico in May 2003. This is food for thought in light of the fact that Braxton's Ghost Trance Music was initially inspired by and offered to the spirits inherent in ancestral Native American drumming traditions. Geographically, this pair of GTM rituals transpired right where some of those traditions were born and are still sustained. On the first of two CDs, Braxton is heard in multiple reed instrument duets with Chris Jones based in the coordinates of "Composition 255." On the second disc, the duo is joined by vocalist Molly Sturges for "Composition 265," which unlike the single-file 255, is encoded on the disc into 11 tracks. The album cover art reveals that during this period Braxton's schematic titles, which for many years have included graphic illustrations -- and, more recently, photographs -- incorporate images of locomotives. While quick jaunts to the West Coast are not unheard of, Braxton's touring patterns are most likely to take him through Eastern North America or anywhere in Europe and the U.K. Prior to the Albuquerque engagement, he had recorded two albums worth of material with trumpeter and longtime colleague Wadada Leo Smith in live performance at Tonic in New York City. Those recordings were made on April 5, 2003. Chronologically, Braxton's next recording would be a duo project with bassist and electronic artist Chris Dahlgren, which took place back on home turf at Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut in July 2003. arwulf arwulf
