A song stylist from the 1950s, in the 1980s Audrey Morris returned to singing, with steady releases of vocal albums on her own label Fancy Faire. While she had lost nothing over the years, she gained greater sensitivity to the messages delivered through the lyrics she sang. Her renditions on Afterthoughts are by no means automatic recitations. They come across as heartfelt and intimate expressions of regret and disappointment relayed through the lyrics of lovely ballads. "My Silent Love" highlights these and the tender qualities of Morris' voice, as well as her ability to delicately interpret classic romantic ballads. The fanciful illusions created by her approach to this song are enhanced by the melodic tenor sax of husband Stu Genovese. This is an outstanding track and can be used as a primer on phrasing and diction that other vocalists would do well to study. To Morris' credit, not all the songs on this CD are familiar ballads, but include gems from unexpected sources. The medley of Jerry Herman's "Time Heals Everything" and "I Won't Send Roses" and Bob Merrill's (composer of 1950 novelty tune hits) "Mira" fit nicely with the album's overall theme of songs that serve as postscripts to busted love affairs or other amorous yearnings. Another nice touch is the singing of some of the songs' verses. On certain tracks, Morris accompanies herself on piano; on others Bruce Robbins is the pianist. The two are interchangeable, with neither having an advantage over the other. Tenor man Genovese chips in with his Stan Getz-like sax on a few tracks. This is a fine vocal CD and is recommended. by Dave Nathan
