CIRCUS 2000 ‎– Circus 2000 (1970-1989) FLAC (tracks+.cue), lossless

The Italian band Circus 2000's debut album (sung entirely in English) may have been heavily derivative of psychedelic rock from English-speaking countries, particularly of the Californian brand, though a bit of British Pink Floydian glide could be heard, too. It was a pretty respectable effort, though, in largest part due to principal lead singer Silvana Aliotta's bewitching vocal style. The group favored melodramatic, haunting (but not morose) melodies with a pastoral tinge, over which Aliotta sang in a sensual but strident vibrato style. Perhaps some of Shocking Blue's work, or early Savage Rose's, might be among the closer reference points (throw in Sonja Kristina's vocals with Curved Air, too), though the similarity isn't extreme. The debt to San Francisco bands is pretty obvious in the guitar work of songs like "Must Walk Forever," where some of the Eastern-influenced soloing sounds right off of early Country Joe & the Fish, though it's well done. It's a minor psychedelic record, but a reasonably worthwhile one, if short (with a total playing time of 29 minutes). Richie Unterberger
